A Teacher’s Guide to Helping Kids with Common Core Math

Suraj Gopal, a special education teacher in New York City, explains how parents can support their children be successful even when academic expectations differ from the ones they were held to in school. He suggests that parents ask their children questions that probe them to justify their thinking and work with their children to recognize math in their daily lives. Finally,  he suggest that parents “observe [their child] working or ask them a few questions to clarify what they do and don’t comprehend,” in an effort to build their confidence and improve.
