Former English Learner Spearheads New System for Tracking StudentsAugust 18, 2016
Liz Serrato, a California teacher who emigrated from Mexico, is working to implement a program designed to help English language learners achieve to the state’s Common Core Standards. Serrato meets regularly with teachers to develop short- and long-term goals for students, including vocabulary building and reading comprehension. “We need individualized instruction based on different needs – and [Serrato] is doing that in a data-driven way, which is amazing,” says Madeline Mavrogordato, an education researcher. Serrato’s work demonstrates ways that educators are using the Common Core to ensure all students receive college- and career-ready supports. “Under the Common Core, teachers have greater flexibility to design their classroom lessons—and can, for the first time, take advantage of the best practices from great teachers in other states,” 21 State Teachers of the Year wrote previously.
