For Mary Hansen, 2016 Department of Defense Teacher of the Year, her “aha” moment in education came from Kylie, a young girl looking forward to her father’s return from deployment in Afghanistan. It was a reminder that “military children serve, too,” Hansen says. “I teach military-connected students who define their benchmarks as events, not dates.” For those students, who relocate frequently, rigorous and consistent education standards are critical. They can lessen the impact of a move and help ensure students remain on a path towards college and career readiness.
