Teachers in Pennsylvania’s Valley View School District are hosting outreach nights for parents to help them better understand changes to math instruction. “Today’s math is taught more conceptually, and there are more algebraic concepts earlier,” says Mike Boccella, a local teacher. As states implement higher standards, math instruction has shifted to help students build stronger foundational skills necessary to succeed at high levels of learning. An analysis by the Collaborative notes the multiple approaches may be unknown to many parents who grew up under old systems, but they help students build math fluency and students are still expected to know their fundamentals, like multiplication tables and standard algorithms.
