We Have 20th Century Teachers Educating 21st Century Students: We Must Improve Professional Development

To help improve student outcomes “we need to better educate their educators about the way they teach,” writes Tom Whitby, a teacher and author. “We need to not only endorse collaboration, but we need to support it.” A RAND study this year finds only 28 percent of math and 31 percent of ELA teachers believe professional development opportunities reflect their needs. Higher standards facilitate greater collaboration, but teaching to higher levels is “only effectively achieved through proper support and training,” three Arizona Teachers of the Year wrote previously.
