Why Inland Schools are Rethinking How They Teach Science

Science teachers in the Riverside Unified School District are beginning to implement new science standards to help students “use problem-solving skills to form their own conclusions” as part of a statewide shift in California. The Next Generation Science Standards complement the Common Core math and English standards and “aim to help deepen students’ knowledge of physical science, life science, earth science and engineering.” The goal is to ensure that every student is “scientifically literate,” and teachers note that the majority of new jobs are in the STEM fields.
