At the Beacon School of Excellence in Brooklyn, New York, 86 percent of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Yet, it is ranked as one of the state’s top 10 schools. Proficiency rates were an astonishing 89 percent in reading and 98 percent in math on this year’s statewide assessments. The school’s success is predicated on “meticulous” planning, parent engagement, support for and collaboration among teachers, and the use of materials aligned to high standards. The school’s success demonstrates how high expectations coupled with proper support and family engagement can bolster student outcomes – or, as the article puts it, that “beacons of excellence exist” in public schools.
