A Teacher Reviews Her Lesson Plans on Critical Thinking and Analysis

2010 Teacher of the Year Sarah Brown Wessling demonstrates how she uses student examination of advertisements and other short texts to help students “develop key analysis skills in a way that’s aligned with the Common Core State Standards.” In the video, Wessling discusses the importance of teaching students not what to think, but how to think, and how, in order to do so effectively, she needs to “process right along with them” and figure out “how to construct meaning.” Not only is this video (and series) an excellent resource for educators, it’s also a fantastic example of how, as states have implemented higher education standards, classroom instruction has shifted to put a greater emphasis on critical thinking and conceptual understanding, and empowered teachers to take even more creative approaches
