Common Core: Teach Literacy in Every SubjectNovember 1, 2016
As states implement high, comparable education standards, educators across subjects like science and social studies are putting a renewed focus on literacy. “We’re asking all teachers to be teachers of reading and writing in their disciplines,” says Bridgett Bird, a Denver school administrator. “If we’re only focused on literacy in [ELA], we are leaving out seven-eighths of the day.” Increased academic expectations have fostered more cross-curriculum learning. In history classes, for example, educators encourage students to think and write “like historians.” “I am supporting literacy in my discipline and beyond,” one middle school teacher explains.
