ESSA and the Reinvention of the Professional Development Wheel

Fifth grade teacher Sarah White questions why current professional development opportunities fail to connect to standards and deeper learning for students and praises the opportunity ESSA provides to reinvent professional development. She points out that districts should focus on ongoing professional development led by teachers, focused on teachers’ specific areas of need. The first step in reinventing professional development, she writes, is to “recognize educators’ areas of great strength and encourage them to share their knowledge.”
