Heather Morgan, a former military intelligence officer turned educator, explains that her experience in the Army reinforced an appreciation for high, comparable standards in the classroom. “In the same way I relied on tough, up-to-date standards in managing Army warrior training, I now rely on academic standards to equip my students for life after secondary school.” Consistent learning goals are especially important for children in military families, who move frequently. It’s time to move debate past labels, Morgan adds, “and focus on how we adapt and translate [higher standards] into authentic, engaging and life-giving experiences for students, teachers, and their communities.”
