Higher Standards Are Leading to Higher Math Scores in Utah

More rigorous academic expectations are beginning to yield improvements in student performance in math for Utah children, a report from the Utah Council of Teachers of Mathematics finds. “The sheer fact that the assessments and the standards are more rigorous, the fact we are seeing those gains I think shows and highlights that our legislature is doing things to support that growth,” says Joleigh Honey, president of the organization. “Students are rising to the challenge.” Those kinds of results make clear, says New Mexico Education Secretary Hanna Skandera, that it would be a mistake for states to retreat from high standards or high-quality assessments.
