2016 Kentucky Teacher of the Year Ashley Lamb-Sinclair asks policymakers to treat teachers with respect and trust and to listen to them as states navigate ESSA implementation. Lamb-Sinclair notes that Finnish teachers have “complete autonomy” and respect in the classroom. Lamb-Sinclair points to the relationship between policymakers and teachers in Kentucky, where she served as a Teacher-in-Residence for the State Department of Education piloting various programs as a model for meaningful teacher input, noting that the “heart of a strong educational system is the teacher in the classroom.”
