Teaching today is not what it used to be only a few years ago, writes Betsy Kinnee, a high-school educator. Her school embraced “learning over earning,” which required a shift to focus more on why and how students develop understanding. That took clear, consistent and rigorous learning goals and professional development support systems. By raising classroom expectations and focusing on those targets to guide instruction, Kinnee adds, educators are revolutionizing schools and “students are the ones who are benefiting. Do standards matter? Yes, because we make them matter.”
