Today’s Students Need Strong, Effective Guidance in Mathematics

Many parents are unfamiliar with changes to math instruction as schools implement rigorous education standards, and there are many conflicting opinions about the brand Common Core, writes second-grade teacher Erin Birden. But regardless of one’s opinion of the label, “the standards drive instruction for the children in front of us right now.” Birden says parents can best support their children by working alongside local teachers, and by taking advantage of resources to help them become familiar with changes happening in their kids’ classrooms. Children “deserve to be championed by confident, mathematically literate adults,” Birden concludes.
